Kayak Fishing with Poppers
1) LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION, Forget anything deeper than a meter for you standard inside fare - if you kayak floats its deep enough to catch fish. A mud/weed/sand bottem mix is better than an open bare sand flat and never disregard ANY structure, even a column of weed in the middle of nowhere will usually have a bream lurking underneath it. 2) As usual first thing in the morning or close to the last thing in the afternoon are the peak times, THERE WILL BE EXCEPTIONS these are more tide driven than anything else which leads me to - I LOVE THE TOP OF THE TIDE for this style of fishing, Just imagine the fish following the higher water up closer to the bank looking for the juicy tidbits that has been denied them for about 6 hrs. The other exception is one I am starting to explore now which is - the jet black popper for use after dark more on this at a later date. 3) Sit and watch in the direction you intend to cast for as long as your patience will allow, keep your eyes peeled for flicking shrimp, boils and general boofs. It would not be the first time I have seen tailing bream.......not very often but enough to get the blood boiling. DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO SPIN AROUND AND FIRE A CAST IN THE DIRECTION OF A SPLASH YOU HEARD BEHIND YOU........unless you are totally confident in your craft and your balence. 4) Make your cast - keep it to the limits of your eyesight, this style of fishing is a very visual style of fishing and you need to be able to see your popper reasonably clearly - cleaning your ears out helps as well. The general idea is to LOOK and LISTEN. 5) Now your popper is in the water, you can go three ways from here.............sit-n-twitch, Bloop or both. Now is the time for experimentation, It wouldn't be the first time a popper has been smashed while just sitting there.Mix up your retrieve, let the lure sit for ages just twitching it (A fav under cicada laden trees) or just bloop bloop bloop bloop back at you with some speed (tends to make bream cranky when they are in THAT sort of a mood). 6) To get a good bloop can take a little practise, I tend to when the popper is furtherest away just flick the rod tip holding the rod VERTICLE slowly moving the rod to the HORIZONTAL the closer the lure is to me, another way to look at is work the rod tip like you are working an SP. The easist way is just have a few practise casts useing these principles and it will start to make sense. 7) Watch your popper like a hawk looking for chasing bow waves, boils and boofs behind and around your popper. Fish CAN AND WILL MISS YOUR POPPER up to 5 plus times before you will either hook them or they will spook at your kayak. Try stopping your popper when it is getting the stuffing beat out of it and then slowly bring your rod tip back dragging the popper through the water in one continual movement until the fish lose interest or you feel the weight of the fish, like I said before mix it up a little to see what you can sort out for your waterway. 8) Don't be put off by the hook up rate which is about 1:4, 1 Fish for 4 follows/hits. Just keep perservering some days are diamonds and some days are............well you know. 9) Sometimes your popper will disappear under a wall of water or just.............disappear, If this happens disregard the above. 10) KEEP CASTING, Try all unlikely spots as well as the likely - nearly put it on the bank if that tickles your fancy, remember these things float so pulling them over sub-surface structure that is impossible to fish any other way is now in the realm of the possible and always remember your kayak has a similar draft. These are just my observations on inside popper fishing |
